Strap and the Knee

Run Distance: 5 miles

So, I ran 5 miles yesterday--on the treadmill because I needed those gym points once again. Anyways, when I first hopped on the treadmill, I forgot to put my strap on. I didn't really feel like getting back off to dig through my bag to look for it--so I kept running. Well, not even a mile into my run, my knee was doing this really odd locking sort of pain. So, now I'm worried that my improvements now rely on the strap. I mean, before the strap, I was able to run at least to 4 miles without knee pain or at least a gradual pain. I mean...yea it is GREAT that I can run painless...but tied to the strap?! I don't know...that is so less glorifying. It is like saying you can walk...but with crutches. Okay, maybe not that extreme...but seriously! Oh well, if it gets me through my marathon-then bring it on.

Anyways, today I am dreading my run. It is only 10 miles. But a 10 mile run on a weekday can make things hectic. I preferred the 5 and 6ers. One of the main reasons I can't wait for this marathon to be done--I can go back to my lovely "little" runs. They really weren't "little" back in the day. 6 is a nice number. But when you've ran 18...it looks like a "little" number. Oh boy...the waters that I swam into.

So...20 miler on the horizon...not sure which day I'm fitting that one into. My mom's bday is on Saturday but I also have a 4 hour class on Saturday. So I think I'll either run Saturday morning or Sunday morning and then just visit the parents on Sunday. Oh how I can't wait to have time back in my day! 2 more weeks!!!

The 10-Miler that Whooped Me

Run Distance: 10 Miles Run Time: 1 Hr 45 Min

So once upon a time there was this girl named Rachel. She decided to set out on 4 straight runs in one week when normally her schedule calls for a rest/cross training day in between. On the third day, she was ready to run 10 miles. It was absolutely gorgeous outside with a nice beautiful breeze. She could smell barbecue, flowers, a strange odor of coffee, and many other beautiful summer smells as she journeyed on her 10 mile trail run through the towns of Hopkins and St. Louis Park. Her pace was steady at about 9:30 for the first 5 miles and started to decline to around 9:40-9:55 during the last 5 miles. She had put music on her I-Pod the night before and was excited to get her run in with music. The music was really helping her keep up pace and she felt like she could conquer the world. The last 2 miles became a little tough as she ended up stopping at 2 stoplights and throwing off her rhythm but she was bound and determined to reach her final destination. Everything was going great...until the instant she stepped in her doorway and had to stop running. She was immediately struck with exhaustion. Despite the need to relax, she did some stretches and hit the shower to get rid of her stinkiness. While in the shower, she realized that her chest was burning and peered down to figure out why. She had read alot about this "chestal chafing" from the sports bra but had neglected to ever believe that it could happen to her. Now she was looking down at two red marks on her chest that were stinging from the water. After showering, she decided to lay on the couch and watch tv for awhile before bed. She felt like it would take a crane to move her feeble body from that location. Eventually it was time for bed but for some reason her mind didn't want to sleep. All night long her body was tossing and turning because she couldn't get into a deep enough sleep. And now tonight she has another 6 miles to run...oh how will she make it???

Antsy for Vacation

Running Distance: 6 miles Running Time: 60 minutes and some change

Yesterday I started my morning with the idea that I would do my 6 mile tempo run that afternoon. Well, by lunchtime I realized that the 6 mile easy run (combining my two 3's) was going to be best. I have a 10 miler today and it seems that if I push too hard the day before it makes for a very tough 10 miler with leg cramps and the like. I think I really need to find some new stretches because my legs seem to seize up on these back to back running days.

Anywho, I'm getting super excited about my trip to Kansas City this weekend. My cousin really wants me to run with her but I've kind of already scheduled all of my runs this week so I may end up going on a "fun run" with her this weekend. The vacation that I'm really excited for is Florida in 2 1/2 weeks! It's going to be tough finding running spots because we are right on the main strip in Daytona. I might do a beach run one morning because the sand is pretty flat down there (they roll it or something?). The bulk of my runs will probably be on the treadmill though because I'm kind of paranoid about running around Daytona all by myself for the fear of my safety. Anyways, if any of you have been to Daytona and have any great suggestions for runs or things to do--let me know! We've been many times (my parents own timeshare there) but I feel like there is always more to learn about an area.

4 Milers and the 10 miler that wasn't

Tuesday: 4 miles, 38 minutes
Wednesday: 4 miles

So Tuesday's run was awesome. Got the pace up quite a bit and finished 4 miles in 38 minutes (including 2 minutes of a walk warm up). Wednesday's run...not as great. I was supposed to get my 10 mile run in. It was 85 degrees here with some really thick icky humidity. There was a little bit of a breeze so I figured I should at least attempt to brave it. I head out to Como Park in St. Paul which is a 1.6 mile loop around Como Lake. Now this can be kind of boring for a 10 mile run but I really didn't feel like hitting a million stoplights trying to get a 10 mile run in either and I had no choice but to do my run in the St.Paul area. But anyway, once I started running, I knew that I would probably be able to make 10 miles. I just kept telling myself that it is just 6 laps. And every time that nice hot breeze came by, I was like....hey Mother Nature is at least giving me some breeze. But let me tell ya...at mile 3 I had my breakdown. It's odd. I was fully prepared to run those 10 miles. I was set and my mind was there until midway through the 3rd lap when I was beat red from the heat and tired of dodging slow walkers. That's another problem with this course...you have lots of walkers who really do like to stand in the middle of the path. I was starting to get worried about my ankles because every time I had to dodge the walkers, I'd have to leap off path because it's not really even anywhere around. But anyways, that's not the main reason I quit. I knew that my other two runs were a 4 miler and a 7 mile interval run for this week. So I let my mind win and took the 4 miler and quit with the 10 miler. I figured that it would be much easier to do my 10 miler this weekend when I can wake up early and not have to deal with the heat.

Thus is my really long boring story about two 4 mile runs. I'm getting internet this weekend! Woohoo! Have a good one.

A New Distance PR

Run Time: 1 Hour, 30 Minutes Run Distance: 10 Miles

So yesterday was a very nice day by the time afternoon rolled around. I fought traffic just so that I could get an outdoor run in on the trails by my house. (In rush hour it takes me over an hour to get home so to avoid rush hour usually I go to the gym). Anyways, yesterday I hit 10 miles. Now...I understand that this is a big leap for someone who has been taking some lighter runs the past few weeks in an attempt to get rid of side stitches...but hear me out...

So I'm running....It's gorgeous outside, the wind is blowing just perfect so that you aren't blown away yet are nicely cooled. The trails are packed with cyclists, rollerbladers and a few fellow runners. I've found that it really helps to see other people when I run because then there are so many more distractions to take in. I was really enjoying this run and you could tell because before I knew it I was 4 miles out. Well, I really could have stopped there...but I wanted to see what was ahead. I've decided this might be a little trouble spot to my running on these trails. I keep wanting to charge ahead to see what's up there. Yesterday I ran clear into another city just to see what was ahead. But anyway, I went another mile and then turned back around at 5 because I knew that it would then be 10 miles by the time I returned. Although I really do still want to know what's out there...I guess I'll have to bike it someday.

But anyway, that's how I ended up with a 10 mile run. The run back was clearly not as exciting as the run out there. But it was odd...I didn't really feel exhausted or extremely sore. My body did start to shoot out some warning signals towards the end...however I finished feeling like I had just finished 3 miles. It was really odd. I didn't feel extremely exhausted right away. But I definetly feel a little more sore today.
